I invented the Kind Reminder™ to help me be a better caregiver for a person with Alzheimer's disease.
In the early stages of my loved one's memory loss, I became tense and frustrated when she repeatedly asked me the same question. She would say, "Have I had my blood pressure medicine?" I would answer, "Yes, don't worry, you have had all of your medication today." Mere seconds would elapse, and she would ask the same question again, and again, . . . and again.
My patience wore thin. I began to look for a way to record comforting information, so that she could listen whenever she felt anxious. Most recorders were too complicated for her to operate. Finally, I identified a network of very generous people who contributed their talents to help me design and produce the Kind Reminder™. The result is that, during the early stages of Alzheimer's, my loved one plays my recorded messages multiple times an hour when she loses her orientation and is uncertain about what is happening. Both of us now feel more at ease.
The Kind Reminder™ has shown me how important it is for a caregiver to have a rich assortment of tools and strategies to meet each new challenge.
